Home Caregiver Training

The Schmieding Center Home Caregiver Training is a three-week course, taught by nurses and other health care professionals. The program is a hybrid class that is both online (virtual) and in person.  It is a unique program designed to teach students to care for older adults in their homes.  The class is comprised of physical skills and Alzheimer’s and dementia training.  The class provides instruction in basic home safety and personal care, as well as, valuable information about how to care for the needs of a person with dementia.  It describes the stages of Alzheimer’s disease and various types of dementia, including, how to manage difficult behaviors.

The Schmieding Center Home Caregiver Training enables students to advance their caregiving skills and competency. This class satisfies the training required by Arkansas law for caregivers who are paid to provide care in the home of a person who is 50 years of age or older.

Requirements

New requirement for upcoming classes! To meet federal requirements and safeguard the health of UAMS Schmieding Caregiver Training Program participants as well as partnering LTC residents and staff, CNA, IHA, AD, and HCA courses will require all participants to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Medical and Religious exemptions may be requested prior to registration. In the event that UAMS grants an exemption but our partnering facility does not allow unvaccinated individuals to enter, the participant will not able to complete the course and therefore cannot register at that time.

In addition, each student will need to have ready access to a computer and DVD Player.   Daily online class meetings are required.  During the class, there will be 6 days of in-person training and testing at the Schmieding Center.  A state background check is required.
